Art of Architecture - Chicago

Develop your Art, Architectural, and Travel Photography Vision!

September 5th - 8th, 2024

Join us in Chicago for a remarkable learning experience in one of the most architecturally diverse cities.

This very special workshop will focus on the artistic side of architectural photography. Four full days of photographing old and new, interiors and exteriors, skyscrapers, and capturing the essence of this incredible urban environment.

This is a three-part photography workshop with an online presentation a few days before the meeting in Chicago. A week later, we will meet again online and have a review session of the images you captured.

You will come away from this workshop capturing many iconic images, learning new ways to visualize your subject, and making new friends!

Students Will Learn

You will learn a variety of techniques—both in the field and in the post-processing tutorial—that will allow you to advance both your technical skills and artistic vision. We focus on a number of professional field techniques to help you create dramatic and powerful images.

The post-processing tutorial will teach you a number of professional “digital darkroom” secrets to enhance your images. Once the workshop is finished, we will meet a week later to review your and the class’s photos and answer any lingering questions you may have.

Activity Level: Light to Moderate:
Chicago is a walking city, so we'll be doing a good bit on foot. Our hotel is situated in a great location with lots of shooting opportunities nearby, but we'll also be taking local transport for some of our shoots. Workshop Participants should be in good health, wear comfortable shoes and clothing, and be ready for lots of walking and standing for extended periods of time.

Dress:
The weather in Chicago in September is beautiful — it's not too hot with highs in the low 70s F°, but it can get a little chilly at night, getting down as low as 60°, so bring at least a light jacket or coat. As with any outdoor event, the weather is somewhat unpredictable, so be prepared if it rains.

A DSLR or Mirrorless Camera; a sturdy tripod with ballhead; wireless remote or cable release; a wide-angle lens (24mm or wider); a telephoto lens.

What level of experience is required?
All levels of experience are welcome, but participants should be familiar with their camera and lens and have some experience in either Lightroom or Photoshop.

Are there other expenses will I need to cover?
As mentioned earlier, one lunch or dinner is on your own. There will be a few instances where you'll need to pay a small entrance fee to an exhibit or location. Also, if our shooting location is not within walking distance (as will be the case some days), you'll have to pick up a bus/subway pass. Outside of those minor costs, we don't anticipate any additional costs.

The hotel offers Airport Shuttle to/from for an additional fee. The Roma Termini railway station is a 10-minute walk to the hotel.
