Randy Van Duinen Photography Workshops are small-group photography experiences designed around hands-on instruction, extraordinary locations, and plenty of time behind the camera. Led by award-winning architectural and travel photographer Randy Van Duinen and, on select workshops, guest instructors with specialized expertise, each workshop is designed to help you become a more confident and creative photographer.Our workshops combine photography in the field with personal instruction, image reviews, post-processing education, and opportunities to learn alongside other photographers. Group sizes are intentionally kept small so you receive individual attention throughout the experience.We also believe your education shouldn't end when the trip does. Most workshops include an online meeting before departure to help you prepare and a post-workshop session after you return home to review images, discuss processing, and answer questions.

Our photography workshops are designed to teach, inspire, and help you become a better photographer—they're much more than a sightseeing tour with a camera. While a photography tour may focus primarily on taking you to great locations, our workshops combine those opportunities with hands-on instruction, personalized guidance, and education throughout the experience.You'll learn composition, camera techniques, creative approaches, and, depending on the workshop, post-processing in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. We keep our groups small, so you receive plenty of individual attention, and many of our participants return year after year.Our goal is simple: to help you create extraordinary images while growing your skills and confidence as a photographer.

Our workshops welcome photographers with a wide range of experience, from enthusiastic beginners to experienced professionals. You don't need to be an expert, but you should have a basic understanding of your camera and be comfortable changing essential settings such as aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and focus.Because our groups are small, Randy and the other instructors can work with participants individually and provide guidance based on their experience and photographic goals. Whether you're working to master the fundamentals or refine more advanced techniques, we'll help you build your skills throughout the workshop.The most important thing to bring is a willingness to learn, experiment, and enjoy photography.

Our workshops can be physically demanding, and the level of activity varies depending on the destination. Many of our days begin before sunrise and end after sunset, often involving extended periods of walking, standing, and carrying camera equipment. It is important to be open and honest about your physical abilities when choosing a workshop.All participants are responsible for carrying their own camera gear and luggage and must be able to enter and exit vehicles without assistance unless arrangements have been made in advance. Each workshop is assigned a fitness level so you know what to expect before registering.EasyPhotography locations are generally within a short walking distance of our transportation. Terrain is typically level or gently sloping, although some uneven or slippery surfaces may be encountered. Participants should be comfortable walking throughout the day and carrying their camera gear.ModerateThese workshops may include walks of one to two miles or more over uneven terrain with moderate elevation changes. Participants should be comfortable carrying their camera gear for extended periods and photographing in a variety of weather and environmental conditions.ChallengingExpect longer or more strenuous hikes, greater elevation changes, and more demanding terrain. You may encounter slippery surfaces, higher elevations, or locations that require good balance and endurance. Participants should be in good physical condition and comfortable spending long days photographing in the field.DifficultThese workshops are designed for photographers in excellent physical condition. They may involve multiple hikes of several miles, significant elevation changes, or photographing at high altitudes. We intentionally keep our photography workshops small so every participant receives plenty of personal attention and hands-on instruction. Most workshops are limited to 6 to 12 photographers, depending on the destination, transportation, accommodations, and photographic locations.Smaller groups also give us greater flexibility in the field, allowing us to respond to changing light, weather, and photographic opportunities without feeling rushed or crowded.The maximum group size for each workshop is listed on its individual workshop page.

Yes, in many cases a non-photographing spouse or travel companion can join you. We understand that you may want to share the travel experience with someone who isn't participating in the photography workshop.Availability and costs will vary depending on the workshop, accommodations, transportation, meals, and other logistics. Some workshop activities or photographic locations may also be limited to registered photographers.Please contact us before registering so we can discuss the specific workshop, availability, and any additional costs for your travel companion.

Every workshop is unique, so what's included will vary depending on the destination and experience. Each workshop page clearly outlines what's included, and we're always happy to answer any questions before you register.Most workshops include photography instruction, entrance fees, and some combination of accommodations, transportation, and meals. In many cases, we provide two meals per day, while others may include special group dinners or lunches. Meal inclusions vary depending on the workshop and destination. Many of our workshops include breakfast, an opening and closing dinner, and selected lunches or other meals during the workshop. We also leave some meals open so you have the opportunity to explore local restaurants and enjoy the destination on your own.The individual workshop page will clearly list which meals are included in your tuition. If you have food allergies or dietary restrictions, please let us know before the workshop so we can work with our hotels, restaurants, and other providers whenever possible.Food is part of the travel experience, and whenever possible, we choose restaurants and meals that give you an opportunity to experience the local culture and cuisine.

You don't need to be an expert photographer to join one of our workshops, but being comfortable with the basic functions of your camera will help you get the most from the experience.We recommend reviewing our How to Prepare for Your Workshop page, especially the Know Your Camera section. Weather is one thing we can't control, but it often creates some of the best photographic opportunities. Rain, fog, dramatic skies, and changing light can produce extraordinary images. We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance for all of our workshops, especially when traveling outside your home country. The right coverage can provide peace of mind and help protect you financially when unexpected circumstances affect your trip.Trip Insurance may provide reimbursement for certain non-refundable expenses if you need to cancel or interrupt your trip because of illness, injury, family emergencies, or other events covered by your policy.Travel Medical Insurance may cover eligible medical expenses such as doctor visits, hospitalization, and emergency treatment while traveling. A deposit is required to reserve your place in a workshop, with the remaining balance due at a later date.
