Take an in-depth look at the complete process behind professional commercial architectural photography during this three-day workshop in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Randy Van Duinen will share the techniques, workflow, and business practices he has developed throughout his career photographing architecture and interiors for architects, designers, builders, and commercial clients.
Limited to just six photographers, the workshop combines classroom instruction with real-world architectural photography. Randy will demonstrate his complete approach to composition, perspective control, natural and supplemental lighting, twilight photography, and light painting while explaining the decisions behind each image.
Back in the classroom, you’ll work through Randy’s Lightroom and Photoshop workflow using images from the workshop shoots. You’ll learn RAW processing, color correction, perspective correction, masking, exposure blending, light painting, cleanup, and the techniques used to create polished images ready for commercial clients.
Just as important, we’ll explore the business behind a successful architectural photography career—from estimating projects, pricing, licensing, and usage to marketing, finding high-end clients, managing a project, and creating a professional workflow from the first client conversation through final image delivery.

July 12, 2027: Gear, Planning, Composition, and Commercial Architectural Photography
We’ll begin in the classroom discussing architectural photography equipment, project planning, scouting, client expectations, and preparing for a commercial assignment. We’ll then move to selected architectural locations where Randy will demonstrate his complete approach to composition, perspective control, natural and supplemental lighting, and capture. Randy will photograph each location and provide the image files for everyone to use during the workshop. We’ll finish the day with our opening dinner.
July 13, 2027: Lightroom, Photoshop, Twilight and Light Painting
We’ll spend the day in the classroom working with images from the previous day. Randy will demonstrate his Lightroom and Photoshop workflow, including RAW processing, color correction, perspective control, masking, exposure blending, cleanup, and techniques for creating polished commercial images. After dinner on your own, we’ll meet at a selected location for a twilight and light painting photography session.
July 14, 2027: Post-Processing and the Business of Architectural Photography
We’ll begin in the classroom processing the twilight and light painting images from the night before, taking them from the original files through finished commercial photographs. We’ll then turn our attention to the business of architectural photography, including estimating projects, pricing, licensing and usage, marketing, finding and working with high-end clients, managing a commercial assignment, and delivering finished images to the client.
No Camera Required
Randy will handle the photography during the scheduled commercial shoots and provide the image files for everyone to use during the Lightroom and Photoshop sessions. This lets you focus on observing the full photographic process and understanding the decisions behind each image, rather than worrying about capturing your own photographs. You’ll also receive the workshop image files to continue practicing the post-processing techniques after the workshop.
You’re welcome to bring your camera to photograph behind-the-scenes images throughout the workshop.

Workshop Details
Fitness
Easy: Most of the workshop takes place in the classroom or at easily accessible architectural locations. Participants should be comfortable walking short distances, standing during photography demonstrations, and going up and down stairs.
Travel & Flights
For those flying to Grand Rapids, the closest airport is Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GRR). We recommend arriving no later than the day before the workshop begins so you are ready for the first classroom session on July 12.
Participants are responsible for their own transportation to Grand Rapids, hotel accommodations, and transportation to and from the workshop classroom location. Hotel recommendations and detailed workshop information will be provided approximately 90 days before the workshop.

A camera is not required for this workshop. Randy will provide the image files used during the Lightroom and Photoshop sessions. Participants should bring a laptop capable of running the current versions of Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.
