Budapest Revealed, Hungary

Iconic Architecture, Hidden Interiors, and Exclusive Access

Spet. 13 - 18, 2027

  • Photograph Budapest’s iconic architecture during beautiful morning and evening light

  • Gain special access to hidden architectural treasures with a local expert

  • Learn from two photographers with distinctly different architectural approaches

Budapest is a city of grand architecture, remarkable interiors, and layers of history—but some of its most compelling photographic subjects are hidden behind doors most visitors simply walk past. During this six-day workshop, Randy Van Duinen and Budapest-based photographer and writer Vincent Baumgartner will lead a small group through both the celebrated landmarks of the city and its lesser-known architectural treasures.

We’ll photograph iconic locations such as the Hungarian Parliament, Fisherman’s Bastion, St. Stephen’s Basilica, the Opera House, historic bridges, and some of Budapest’s extraordinary interiors. Just as importantly, two half days will be devoted to locations selected through Vincent’s local knowledge and access—historic residential buildings, courtyards, staircases, architectural details, and spaces that reveal a very different side of Budapest. Vincent’s Buildings Tell Tales project is specifically devoted to documenting these lesser-known buildings and the stories connected to them.

The workshop will be limited to just 12 photographers, allowing Randy and Vincent to work closely with participants in the field. Photography will be scheduled around the best light, with early mornings for quieter locations and evening sessions for golden hour, sunset, twilight, and blue hour along the Danube.

A pre-workshop Zoom meeting will cover preparation, equipment, travel logistics, and what to expect in Budapest. After everyone returns home and has had time to work with their photographs, we’ll meet again online for image processing, image review, and questions about the techniques used throughout the workshop.

September 13, 2027: Arrival in Budapest, Orientation and Welcome Dinner

Arrive in Budapest and check into our hotel in the city center. You’ll have time to settle in and explore before meeting Randy, Vincent, and the group for our workshop orientation and opening dinner.

September 14, 2027: Fisherman’s Bastion Sunrise, Matthias Church, Parliament and Danube Blue Hour

We’ll begin early at Fisherman’s Bastion, photographing its arches, towers, and views across the Danube before the crowds arrive. After breakfast, we’ll explore Matthias Church and the Castle District before an afternoon break. Late in the day, we’ll photograph the Hungarian Parliament and Danube waterfront as sunset transitions into blue hour.

September 15, 2027: Hidden Budapest with Vincent, St. Stephen’s Basilica and Chain Bridge Twilight

We’ll devote the morning to locations made possible through Vincent’s local knowledge and access, photographing historic residential buildings, courtyards, staircases, and architectural details rarely seen by visitors. After lunch on your own and an afternoon break, we’ll photograph St. Stephen’s Basilica and continue toward the Danube for Chain Bridge and the Budapest skyline through sunset and twilight.

September 16, 2027: Ervin Szabó Library, Hungarian State Opera and Liberty Bridge Sunset

We’ll start with architectural interiors, including the historic spaces of the Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library, before continuing to the Hungarian State Opera and its remarkable restored interior. The Opera currently allows non-commercial photography during tours, although flash and tripods are prohibited. After an afternoon break, we’ll head toward Liberty Bridge and the Danube for an evening photography session through blue hour.

September 17, 2027: Hidden Architecture with Vincent, Historic Budapest and Final Evening Shoot

Our second access-focused session with Vincent will take us inside another selection of Budapest buildings, giving us time to photograph courtyards, staircases, interiors, textures, and details while learning the stories connected to these places. After an afternoon break, we’ll select our final evening location based on weather and light, returning to one of Budapest’s strongest viewpoints before our closing dinner.

September 18, 2027: Final Budapest Shoot, Image Review and Workshop Wrap-Up

We’ll head out early for one final photography session at a location selected according to the conditions and the needs of the group. After breakfast, we’ll return to the hotel for an image review, questions, and workshop wrap-up, concluding around noon.
