Few cities offer photographers the visual richness and extraordinary history of Rome. From ancient ruins and Renaissance masterpieces to magnificent churches, fountains, and lively streets, Rome offers an incredible combination of architecture, culture, history, and photographic opportunities around every corner.
Our days will be planned around the best available light, with early mornings at iconic locations such as the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, and St. Peter’s Basilica. In the evenings, we’ll photograph Rome as sunset gives way to blue hour, capturing the Roman Forum, Castel Sant’Angelo, St. Peter’s, and panoramic views across the Eternal City.
One of the highlights of the workshop will be an early-morning visit to the Vatican Museums before regular public opening hours, giving us an opportunity to experience and photograph its remarkable architecture, galleries, and famous spiral staircase before continuing to the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica.
Limited to just six photographers, the workshop gives Randy plenty of time to work individually with each participant in the field. Along the way, we’ll explore historic neighborhoods, architectural interiors, hidden details, and the character of everyday Rome while learning to see and photograph the city creatively.

November 14, 2027: Arrival in Rome, Orientation and Welcome Dinner
Arrive in Rome and check into our hotel in the historic center. You’ll have the afternoon to settle in, explore the surrounding neighborhood, or relax after your travels. In the evening, we’ll meet for our workshop orientation, discuss the week ahead, and enjoy our welcome dinner together.
November 15, 2027: Trevi Fountain Sunrise, Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza, Ponte Sant’Angelo Blue Hour
We’ll start early at the Trevi Fountain, photographing this iconic landmark before the crowds arrive. After breakfast, we’ll explore Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza and the streets of historic Rome. Following lunch and an afternoon break, we’ll photograph Ponte Sant’Angelo and Castel Sant’Angelo through sunset and blue hour.
November 16, 2027: Vatican Museums Early Access, Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica, and Rome at Sunset
We’ll begin very early with special early access to the Vatican Museums before regular opening hours, giving us an opportunity to experience its remarkable architecture, galleries, and famous spiral staircase with fewer visitors. We’ll continue through the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica before taking an afternoon break. In the evening, we’ll photograph panoramic views across Rome through sunset and blue hour.
November 17, 2027: Colosseum Sunrise, Historic Churches, Roman Forum Sunset
We’ll begin before sunrise at the Colosseum, photographing ancient Rome in the soft early-morning light. After breakfast, we’ll visit Santa Maria Maggiore and San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane, concentrating on their extraordinary architecture and interiors. Following lunch and an afternoon break, we’ll photograph the Roman Forum and surrounding ruins through sunset and blue hour.
November 18, 2027: Spanish Steps, Doria Pamphilj, St. Peter’s Sunset and Closing Dinner
We’ll begin early at the Spanish Steps and Piazza di Spagna before the city gets busy. After breakfast, we’ll photograph the beautiful interiors of Doria Pamphilj before lunch and an afternoon break. We’ll finish our final evening of photography around St. Peter’s Basilica and St. Peter’s Square through sunset and blue hour, followed by our closing dinner together.
November 19, 2027: Pantheon Sunrise, Historic Rome, Image Review and Workshop Wrap-Up
We’ll start our final morning photographing the Pantheon and surrounding streets while Rome is still quiet. After breakfast, we’ll return to the hotel for our final image review, post-processing discussion, and workshop wrap-up, concluding around noon.

The Rome Experience
Rome is designed for photographers who want to experience the city beyond simply visiting its famous landmarks. From ancient ruins and magnificent churches to Renaissance architecture, grand piazzas, fountains, and quiet historic streets, Rome offers an extraordinary variety of subjects within a remarkably compact city.
With only six participants, we’ll have the flexibility to work around the best available light and conditions. Randy will be beside you in the field, helping with composition, perspective, exposure, architectural photography techniques, and creative ways to capture the character of the Eternal City.

Workshop Details
Fitness
Moderate: Rome is a wonderfully walkable city, and exploring on foot is one of the best ways to experience it. Expect several miles of walking each day, along with stairs, uneven historic streets, and public transportation while carrying your camera gear.
Flights
Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) is the city’s primary international airport. Participants are responsible for transportation to and from the workshop hotel. Plan to arrive in Rome by the afternoon of November 14, 2027, in time for our orientation and welcome dinner.
